Role and Position Objectives:

As a Software & Systems Infrastructure Integration Intern for the Multipurpose Interactive Trainer (MIT) team, you will be an integral member of a cross-functional engineering team delivering cutting-edge training systems to the submarine fleets of both the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Navy.

Our work is dynamic and hands-on. In this role, you will focus on the foundational IT and virtual infrastructure that powers our trainers—deploying operating systems, configuring virtual environments, supporting physical lab hardware, and exploring modern technologies such as containerization. You will work alongside experienced systems and software engineers who are dedicated to mentoring you and accelerating your technical growth.

Key Responsibilities:

As an intern on our team, you will contribute to the following tasks:

- System Administration & Infrastructure: Install, configure, and maintain Linux operating systems and system services, both natively on bare-metal servers and within virtual machines (VMs) and/or containers.

- Virtualization & Hardware Setup: Support physical hardware setup, server racking, and network cabling in our local development and integration labs.

- Containers & Orchestration: Assist with configuring, prototyping, and deployment of a new Containerized environment to replace existing infrastructure.

- Testing & Diagnostics: Monitor system health, test environment setups, and help troubleshoot infrastructure anomalies and performance bottlenecks.

- Scripting & Automation: Write and update shell scripts (e.g., Python, Bash) to automate routine deployment, configuration, and testing tasks.

Basic Qualifications & Preferred Skills:

We encourage you to apply if you meet the following baseline criteria:

- Education: Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

- Operating Systems: Foundational familiarity with Linux-based operating systems (command-line navigation, package management, user permissions).

- Scripting: Exposure to scripting languages such as Python or Bash.

- Tools: Basic understanding of version control systems (e.g., Git).

- Mindset: Strong problem-solving aptitude, curiosity to learn new technologies, and eagerness to contribute in a collaborative team environment.

What Sets You Apart:

- Academic or personal/homelab experience installing and managing Kubernetes clusters, Docker containers, or microservices.

- Experience with virtualization platforms (e.g., KVM, Proxmox, VMware, VirtualBox).

- Foundational networking knowledge (TCP/IP, subnetting, DHCP, DNS, VLANs).

- Hands-on experience assembling PC/server hardware, cabling, or lab equipment.

- Active involvement in technical clubs, robotics teams, open-source projects, or engineering hackathons.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a proactive approach to asking questions and learning.

Workplace & Schedule Details:

- Security Clearance: No clearance required prior to start; must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense Secret security clearance.

- Travel: 0% (No travel required).

- Work Location: Fully on-site in Manassas, Virginia .

Our Commitment to You:

- Direct Mentorship: One-on-one guidance from seasoned engineers who are invested in your technical growth and career progression.
